Nikolai Sherstnev: Memory about lessons of the war will help preserve peace

Memory of the lessons taught by the past war will help avoid new victims and preserve peace. The statement was made by Vitebsk Oblast Governor Nikolai Sherstnev during the rally held on 22 June to mark Day of Nationwide Memory of Great Patriotic War Victims, BelTA has learned.

The head of the Vitebsk Oblast administration said: “In the year when we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory we fully understand that the victory saved our native land from enslavement. It freed Europe, granted us complete independence and the very possibility of the Belarusian state’s existence. Today we would like to believe that the war will never return. However, the situation in the world is alarming: the supremacy of force is trying to replace the supremacy of law. This is why remembering about the tragic lessons of the past war has never been more important. No political ambitions, calculations, and interests are worth sacrificing human lives for. We will always remember that. And we will keep peace and calm in our native land as the greatest treasure.”

The Vitebsk Oblast Governor underlined that the enemy faced the nation’s powerful widespread resistance from the very first days. Many deeds of courage and valor were committed by Soviet warriors in Vitebsk lands. A major tank battle that took place on 6-10 July 1941 and went down in history as the Lepel counterattack was a unique example. A new weapon revealed itself to the world with volleys of multiple-launch rocket system fire near Orsha. The weapon determined the outcome of many battles later on. “Despite the inhumane terror campaign, mass slaughters during the occupation period the Belarusian nation kept believing in victory and did not bow to the enemy. In the fierce fighting the republic lost every third resident. In Vitebsk Oblast alone there are 1,243 graves of army warriors and partisans. Our sacred duty is to preserve the memory about those, who gave their lives in return for the freedom and independence of the Motherland,” stressed Nikolai Sherstnev.
