Making hasty changes to the legislation ahead of the parliamentary election would be a wrong thing to do, Director of the National Legislation and Legal Research Center of Belarus Vadim Ipatov said at a meeting of the interdepartmental working group of experts on 16 February to review the OSCE ODIHR recommendations to improve the election process in the Republic of Belarus, BelTA informs.

“It will be wrong to rush amendments,” said Vadim Ipatov. He cited the recent local elections in Ukraine as an example. According to Vadim Ipatov, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine was in an extremely difficult situation as the legislation was changed days before the elections. “Although the Central Election Commission did its work well, the enforcement of the laws entailed a lot of issues,” he noted.

“The preparation of draft laws is a long procedure that requires a systemic approach, consideration of all the proposals that can be implemented,” Vadim Ipatov added.
