Lidia Yermoshina: The election debates should be between two candidates

The debates between candidates for the office of the Belarus president should be held in pairs and feature the candidates themselves and not their representatives, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina said in an interview with the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“If we decide to organize debates, I suggest we hold them in pairs as we did in 1994. I mean that election debates should feature two candidates. Why? Because when the head of state decides to take part in the debates then it will be him vs everybody else. This is going to be a mass fight. We can hardly call this a debate,” Lidia Yermoshina noted.

She also believes that election debates should feature the candidates themselves, not their representatives. “In a sense, this means defrauding the electorate,” Lidia Yermoshina stressed.
