Leonid Gulyako: No preconditions for confrontation within churches in Belarus

In Belarus there are no preconditions for confrontation within churches, Commissioner on Religious and Ethnic Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Leonid Gulyako told journalists on 23 June, BelTA has learned.

“There are no such preconditions in Belarus. There is no reason to fear a split within churches, especially within the Belarusian Orthodox Church,” Leonid Gulyako stressed.

In his words, the provisions of the law on freedom of conscience and religious organizations are strictly observed. “Not a single church has ever complained that the law is only for the most practiced religions, let us say, Orthodoxy and Catholicism. All the 25 religions successfully coexist in Belarus, which to a great extent depends not only on the country’s government, but also on the position of the Belarusian Orthodox Church,” Leonid Gulyako believes.

He also noted that the visit of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to Belarus became an important event for Orthodox believers. “Indeed, people had been looking forward to this visit. It became an important event not only for the Orthodox Church, but for all religious people in general,” he added.

The visit of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia was timed to the 1000th anniversary of the Repose of the Holy Equal-To-The-Apostles Prince Vladimir. Leonid Gulyako said that events to celebrate the anniversary will be held in Belarus during the whole year.
