Today's world still witnesses attempts to distort history, in particular, the history of the Great Patriotic War. Therefore, the CIS states should actively challenge such attempts, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev told reporters on 16 April, BelTA has learned.

The celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War is high on the agenda of the CIS Executive Committee. The matter was discussed at the recent sessions of the CIS Heads of State Council and the CIS Heads of Government Council. It will also be raised at the session of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Participants of the Commonwealth on 16 April.

“The CIS Executive Committee proceeds from the fact that this anniversary unites us and we should discuss it together,” Sergei Lebedev underlined. He noted that the Commonwealth developed an action plan to mark the 75th anniversary of the Victory. In line with the action plan, burial sites will be tidied up, social support will be provided to veterans and their families, commemorative events will be held to pay tribute to the fallen.

At the same time, Sergei Lebedev stated with regret that attempts to misrepresent the events of the Great Patriotic War still persist. “Unfortunately, we keep witnessing attempts to split us and to distort the history. This matter was discussed at the CIS Ministerial Council Meeting. We talked about the need to challenge the attempts to distort history and to come up with a common position, common assessment of history, including in collaboration with western historians. This work is needed,” he said.
