It is important to keep memory of soldiers' deed and foster respect for history in young people, Belarusian canoeist, Olympic champion and seven-time world champion, Honored Master of Sport of Belarus, holder of the Orders of Fatherland II and III Class Roman Petrushenko told BelTA.

Roman Petrushenko said that he was raised in a family where Victory Day has always been celebrated and honored. “For people from the Soviet times, it has always been a family holiday. They appreciate what our great grandfathers and grandfathers did. The modern generation has a slightly different world view. Young people do not always understand the meaning of the deed our ancestors did. This is our history, and we should honor and respect it, pay tribute to the war veterans, people who made this Victory ours. Nobody knows what would have happened without this Victory,” he stressed.

According to Roman Petrushenko, the Great Patriotic War affected every Belarusian family one way or another. The Petrushenko family was not left out either. Roman's grandfather along his father's line - Ivan Fedorovich - went to the front line to defend his homeland. According to the recollections of his family, he died in 1945 near Ozarichi, Kalinkovichi District. Very little information about him has left. No photos were left behind. The famous grandson collected information about him from his few relatives who lived in the time of the family hero.

Flowers were laid at the Mound of Glory as part of the Belarus Remembers. We Remember Everyone nationwide campaign in Mozyr. The prominent athlete joined the event.
