The Belarusian-Estonian dialogue contributes to the strengthening of cooperation in the region, Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas said at a ceremony on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Estonia in Minsk on 28 February, BelTA has learned.
The deputy minister emphasized that this historic event, which occurred at the turn of the epochs, was of critical importance for both Estonia and its neighbors in the region. Since then Estonia has come a long way and has achieved great successes as the European independent state, Andrei Dapkiunas stressed.
The Belarusian-Estonian cooperation is based on the long-standing relations between the two countries. “We always see Estonia as an important partner in the Baltic region and Europe as a whole,” the deputy minister said. He drew attention to the fact that Estonia's Presidency in the EU Council last year saw many important activities.
Belarus and Estonia have been gradually increasing mutual trade. Andrei Dapkiunas expressed the confidence that the two states would find new successful areas for further cooperation.
According to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Estonia to Belarus Merike Kokajev, Estonia declared independence on 24 February 1918. “The country went through different periods in its history, including the ones when we were unable to take independent decisions. Today our statehood is strong and we have made great achievements in many areas,” Ambassador Merike Kokajev said.
Estonia's recent presidency in the Council of the European Union made it possible for the country to demonstrate its achievements in various fields, including science, culture, and sport.
The head of the diplomatic mission stressed that the spiritual wealth of the people remains the most important thing. Wellbeing of people, the health of the nation is more important than any rapid changes in the society, she noted. The Estonian ambassador to Belarus expressed confidence that her country will continue to develop successfully.
