A commemorative rally was held in the village of Astashevo, Liozno District on 22 March. A punitive unit surrounded the village on 30 September 1943, just a few days before the liberation of the town of Liozno. All those who did not have time to escape into the forest (and among them were young children under three) were herded into a barn and two bathhouses and were set on fire. The village of Astashevo shared the fate of 433 villages that were burned down and never rebuilt and is commemorated in the Khatyn Memorial Complex.
