Belarus' New Agro-Climatic Zone

Belarus' New Agro-Climatic Zone

With the observations held since 1881, the highest average annual temperature in Belarus has been recorded during the period from 1989 to 2015. The climate change led to the appearance of a new, warmer agro-climatic zone in the country.

Traditionally, Belarus was divided into three agro-climatic zones*:

Northern: the sum of mean daily temperatures above 10°С – less than 2,200°С

Central: the sum of temperatures – 2,200-2,400°С

Southern: the sum of temperatures – 2,400-2,600°С

The fourth agro-climatic zone: the sum of mean daily temperatures above 10°С – over 2,600°С

The new zone has the shortest and warmest winter in Belarus and the longest summer, which enables the cultivation of warm-weather crops.

Measures taken to adapt the Belarusian agricultural sector to climate change:

increasing areas under corn

cultivating winter barley that can be harvested 2-3 weeks earlier than other crops

expanding sowing areas under coleseed

annual sowing of soya (up to 5,000 hectares)

expanding sowing areas under sunflower, peas, sweet corn, green beans

cultivating onions as an annual crop

cultivating warm-weather potatoes

developing industrial plantations of grapes and gourds

*Zonal division is determined by the sum of mean daily temperatures above 10°С per year.
