Ten-year time lapse of Sun from NASA's SDO

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has presented the result of a ten-year observation of the Sun in a single video. The video is available on YouTube.

With the help of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory – SDO – on its orbit in space around Earth, scientists have gathered over 425 million high-resolution images of the Sun and compiled them in a video. This video enables people to watch the Sun's 11-year solar cycle and notable events.

The ten-year time lapse showcases photos taken at the wavelength that shows the Sun's outermost atmospheric layer – the corona. This enables to study the workings of our closest star. SDO captures an image of the Sun every 0.75 seconds, amassing 20 million gigabytes of data over the past ten years. The video also highlights notable events, like transiting planets and eruptions.
