Mogilev celebrates Nowruz

The Spring Equinox is celebrated by many nations of the world. It is Holi, the festival of colors, in India and Shunbun no Hi, the cherry blossom season, in Japan. The Slavs used to celebrate Komoeditsa, the prototype of the Maslenitsa Festival, a symbol of spring and fieldwork. Nowruz is celebrated by Iranian and Turkic peoples. It is a national holiday in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Albania, Macedonia and other countries. BelTA correspondents visited the Azerbaijani diaspora in Mogilev to learn more about Nowruz traditions.

The Mogilev public association Azerbaijani community Aizeri is led by Ilyas Ilyasov. Some 1,000 Azerbaijanis live in Mogilev Oblast. Ilyas' family keeps the traditions of Nowruz which is marked on 21 March. The preparations for the celebrations start a week before the Spring Equinox.
