Bison herd in Volozhin District

VOLOZHIN DISTRICT, 21 March (BelTA) - The Republic of Belarus is the world's leader in the number of free-living bison. There are 11 micro-populations of bison in the country. The largest herds are concentrated in five territories: Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, the Ozery reserve in Grodno District, Krasny Bor reserve in Verkhnedvinsk District, the Osipovichi Experimental Forestry, the Polesie Radiation and Ecological Reserve.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of unique animals was on the verge of extinction and numbered less than 100 individuals. Today numerous herds have settled throughout the country.
