Tentative plans to enforce universal retail prices for some alcohol products in Belarus

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) – The enforcement of universal retail prices for some kinds of alcohol products may be authorized in Belarus. The relevant proposal was discussed during the government conference held by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 22 October to discuss the development of the national alcohol industry, BelTA learned from Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Rusy.

Mikhail Rusy said: “We suggested stepping up the state oversight via popular kinds of alcoholic beverages the way it is done in a number of countries. We suggested enforcing minimal entry prices, a universal markup, and respectively universal retail prices. The approach will be under consideration. Those, who make premium products, exclusive products, and souvenirs, will face no restrictions. They will be free to use negotiated prices.”

Mikhail Rusy explained that among other things the government would like to see the same retail price for popular kinds of vodka by enforcing one and the same markup.

“The government has already decided in favor of the universal retail markup,” he added.
