Science touted as foundation of Belarus-Russia Union State's stable economic development

MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) – In conditions of sanctions science should become the foundation of sustainable economic development of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus Sergei Shlychkov made the statement during the expert and media forum “The Union State: Economic integration - development tasks”, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Shlychkov said: “We and Russian colleagues understand well that leadership can be preserved only if new knowledge is promptly and effectively converted into modern technologies, which are applied in all spheres of life of our countries. In conditions of growing pressure of sanctions science should become the foundation, the engine of sustainable economic development.”

R&D programs are the main tool for realizing the scientific and technical policy of the Union State of Belarus and Russia and forming the common scientific and technological space. “Time has proven their effectiveness. Over 60 programs have already been fulfilled in such areas as space technologies, microelectronics, information technologies, mechanical engineering, healthcare, and many other ones,” he remarked.

2020 saw the completion of yet another important R&D program of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. It dealt with the development of a new generation of electronic components for control and safety systems of special-purpose and dual-purpose motor vehicles. Results of the program have been used to create BelAZ's driverless haul trucks, which the Siberian coal energy company SUEK already uses for mining. Assimilation and production of the cutting-edge innovative solutions developed within the framework of the program will give additional acceleration to the development of automobile industry and radio electronics industry, the official said.

Space industry is one of the areas for the most effective assimilation of modern digital technologies. Seven programs have already been implemented. Thanks to tight cooperation Belarus and Russia have managed to create a constellation of satellites and the relevant infrastructure. “The remote Earth sensing data is used in our countries to prevent and alleviate consequences of emergencies, design and build roads, update the land information system, in law enforcement, environmental protection, and other spheres,” the chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee of Belarus said.

Another Union State program in the area of space industry is being implemented now – Integration-SG. Its goal is to improve the effectiveness of remote Earth sensing data processing and provide the results to users in Belarus and Russia. The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Russian state corporation Roscosmos are the state customers of the program.
