Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast shows interest in import substitution projects with Belarus

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) - Nizhny Novgorod Oblast of Russia is interested in the development of import-substitution projects with Belarus, Minister of Industry, Trade and Entrepreneurship of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Maksim Cherkasov said at the business forum of Belarus and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast of Russia Supplier's Day, BelTA has learned.

According to Maksim Cherkasov, the Russian region has been actively cooperating with the industry of Belarus over the past two years. “The result of the work is the increased trade between Belarus and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Today's forum is held in a new format - it is more profound work of our industrial enterprises. In Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, even before the special military operation, we used to hold the so-called supplier days, during which we gathered large companies and offered opportunities of our small and medium-sized companies. Today this format has gone international,” he said.

Thanks to joint efforts of the chambers of commerce and industry of Belarus and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, enterprises, which are interested in cooperation, have an opportunity to communicate as part of B2B-talks today. “These days a number of events will be held to showcase the possibilities for Belarusian and Russian exports and provide representatives of Nizhny Novgorod enterprises with an opportunity to visit production facilities which they find interesting. Last year, this work brought very good results. We signed contracts in completely different areas: from the nuclear industry and mechanical engineering to joint projects in chemistry and cosmetics. Given the focus on import substitution, our enterprises have now received the opportunity to offer Belarus new products and projects, and Belarusian companies have the opportunity to supply new products," Maksim Cherkasov said.

The Russian minister also noted that last year work was carried out not only on the conclusion of contracts. "A new joint venture to manufacture trams jointly with Belarusian Belkommunmash was launched in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The Russian-Belarusian trams have entered service in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. We expect that the level of localization will reach 90%," he added.

The Supplier's Day forum is held in furtherance of the agreements reached during a government visit of Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko to Nizhny Novgorod in early February of this year. These days Belarus is hosting a return visit of 30 Nizhny Novgorod companies consisting of 60 people.
