Recycling rate of municipal waste in Belarus at 27.3% in H1 2020

MINSK, 13 August (BelTA) - The recycling rate of municipal solid waste in Belarus made up 27.3% in H1 2020, BelTA learned from the press service of the Natural Resources and Environment Protection Ministry of Belarus.

“Work continues to improve the municipal waste management system, to increase the recycling rate. According to the preliminary information submitted by the territorial bodies of the Natural Resources and Environment Protection Ministry, in January-June 2020 Belarus generated about 1.44 million tonnes of solid municipal waste. The recycling rate of municipal solid waste in Belarus was at 27.3% (25.4% in January-June a year earlier),” the press service said.

In order to reduce the harmful impact on the environment, to optimize the waste management system, work continues to reduce the number of mini-landfills. In January-June, 94 mini-landfills that has been decommissioned were reclaimed. Some 112 waste disposal facilities were fenced off.

In H1 2020, there were 9,222 incidents of waste disposal outside the authorized sites. For these violations, 834 perpetrators were brought to administrative responsibility, the amount of fines amounted to Br268,800. Over 91% of unauthorized waste disposal sites were liquidated. Others are being eliminated too.
