Poland ready to invest in pellet plants in Belarus

MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – Polish woodworking companies are ready to invest in pellet plants in Belarus, spokesman of the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE) Roman Yaniv told BelTA.

Prospects for advancing Belarusian-Polish cooperation in woodworking and procurement of raw materials for pellet production were in focus of a roundtable that was held at the National Investment and Privatization Agency on 26 November.

Taking part in the event were representatives of Polish woodworking companies, the Polish National Energy Conservation Agency (KAPE), the Polish Pellet Council, the Polish Embassy in Belarus, the Belarusian Forestry Ministry, the Belarusian enterprise Bellesexport, the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange, and the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“Heads of several Polish companies expressed interest in implementing joint projects to produce wood pellets and briquettes that are considered one of the most eco-friendly types of fuel and enjoy a strong demand in the European Union,” Roman Yaniv noted. It is expected that raw materials for such projects will be purchased via the BUCE that has held bids in wood chips and wood residue for several years. According to the BUCE, in January-October 2019 foreign companies purchased over 3.3 million cubic meters of such products worth a total of $65 million via the exchange. Poland accounted for 51% of this amount.

“Participants of the roundtable agreed that export of pellet fuel can also be organized via the commodity exchange as there is a pool of potential buyers, most of them having accreditation at the exchange,” Roman Yaniv added.

Representatives of Polish enterprises also visited the Borisov Experimental Forestry to study the manufacturing technologies and the quality of Belarusian lumber and wood chips.
