Plans to set up AI research institute in China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone

MINSK, 1 July (BelTA) – An artificial intelligence research institute will be established in the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone. International Intelligent Machines Company and the Informatics Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus signed the relevant memorandum during the first forum on artificial intelligence in the park on 1 July, BelTA has learned.

The institute's Director General Aleksandr Tuzikov told media that the document specifies a number of areas of interest for the Belarusian side and the Chinese one. The areas are related to smart robot technologies, robot navigation, smart vision systems, and speech interfaces.

The sides intend to get down to implementing the project in early 2020. All the organizational matters as well as financial ones are supposed to be taken care of by the end of 2019.

Cooperation with the Chinese company will foster the development of new innovative technologies in Belarus, Aleksandr Tuzikov stressed. He remarked that China pays close attention to artificial intelligence. In 2017 the country adopted a program, according to which China intends to become a world leader in this field. China invests huge amounts of money in the development of this area.

In turn, Huang Weiwei, Director General for Technology at International Intelligent Machines Company, is convinced that the joint research institute will allow Belarus and China to advance cooperation in the area of artificial intelligence to new heights since the sides will complement each other. “After today's forum our cooperation will definitely become an example in this sphere,” Huang Weiwei is convinced. He also believes that this interaction will benefit not only Belarus but neighboring countries as well.

According to Chief Executive Officer of SZAO Industrial Park Development Company Hu Zheng, the establishment of the institute will not only contribute to enhancing the scientific potential of the two countries but also to the development of high technologies in the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone as a whole.

The first forum on artificial intelligence was arranged within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative. Participants of the forum discussed the development of AI and possible economic applications, assistance with modernizing this industry in order to ensure faster growth of the Belarusian economy as well as other matters.

The forum has been organized by SZAO Industrial Park Development Company, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and International Intelligent Machines Company.
