Plans to hold Belarusian-Japanese economic forum in Minsk in September

MINSK, 8 July (BelTA) - The possibility of holding the second Belarusian-Japanese economic forum in Minsk in September is currently on the agenda, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Japan Ruslan Esin said in an interview with BelTA.

“We are considering holding the second Belarusian-Japanese economic forum which could take place in Minsk on 17-18 September 2019 on the margins of the Belarusian Industrial Forum,” the ambassador said.

He recalled that this year marks the 27th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Great work has been done to build up the economic potential of bilateral relations since then. “Several generations of Belarusian trade and economic advisers, in close cooperation with specialists of domestic enterprises, have been persuading Japanese businessmen to start joint projects. Now we have the examples of successful projects. For example, Horizont Holding Company effectively cooperates with Japanese corporations Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp and Socionex, and Bykhov Vegetable Drying Plant with a retail company from Osaka,” the ambassador noted.

Along with the work to promote Belarusian products on the Japanese market, the embassy provides diplomatic support for projects which are proposed for Japanese businessmen in Belarus. These include projects to assemble units and parts for passenger cars and trucks, to produce a new generation of cabs of trucks and construction equipment, to set up an assembly line to produce tires.

“However, with the legal framework governing bilateral economic and investment relations almost non-existent, taking into account the Japanese philosophy and traditions of doing business, it it premature to talk about the willingness of our partners to embark on large-scale projects in Belarus today,” Ambassador Ruslan Esin said.

At the same time, we see as encouraging the recent negotiations with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Japan Bank for International Cooperation and the economic activities held in the summer in Tokyo and Fukuoka with the participation of representatives of Belarus, Japan and China . The give an opportunity to the parties to re-evaluate cooperation prospects.

“With the growing dialogue between Japan and states-members of the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union, increasing freight traffic along the Trans-Siberian railway, the final destination point of which is Brest in the western direction, Belarus is growing more attractive for Japanese business. In addition, a new window of opportunity is opening up for Japanese business in light of the idea to set up a Japanese subpark in the Great Stone park and other preferential regimes in the Republic of Belarus,” the ambassador added.
