Plans to build 270,000m2 of rental housing in Belarus in 2021

MINSK, 24 July (BelTA) – There are plans to build 270,000m2 of rental housing in Belarus in 2021, BelTA learned from Aleksandr Avramenko, Head of the Housing Policy Office of the Belarusian Architecture and Construction Ministry, on 24 July.

The official said there are plans to build 135,000m2 of rental housing in 2020 and the goal will be accomplished. Since rental housing accounts for 3.4% of the total housing in the country at present, 135,000m2 is definitely a small figure. Particularly bearing in mind the strong demand for rental apartments. For instance, there can be 150-200 potential tenants per rental apartment in Minsk. This is why close attention will be paid to the matter. “In 2021 we intend to build roughly twice as much than this year – 270,000m2,” Aleksandr Avramenko noted.

The official underlined that if it looks like it is possible to build more rental housing in 2021 than the plan specifies, the country's civil engineering industry will do its best to make it happen. “It doesn't depend purely on our desires but certainly on financing. Any construction heavily relies on financing. We will pay attention to getting rental housing built not only at the expense of the state budget the way it mainly has been done up till now, but at the expense of money of enterprises of various forms of ownership. The legal base for it has already been created. In order to increase the number of people wanting to have rental housing built, the ministry and colleagues from other agencies are working on ways to enable additional preferences,” he said.
