Peat extraction in Belarus up by 19% in 2018 to nearly 2.6m tonnes

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian peat industry is finishing a peat extraction season, BelTA learned from the press service of the Energy Ministry.

As of 16 September Belarusian companies extracted 2,568,400 tonnes of peat, which is 10.4% above the annual target and 19% more as compared to the same period a year prior. All 23 peat producing companies have met the seasonal targets.

The peat production target for 2018 takes into account the demand of peat products manufacturers for the raw material and the H1 2019 peat stocks projections, the press service noted. Given the good weather, some companies continue to extract peat.

The peat industry organizations of the Energy Ministry can produce approximately 2.5 million tonnes of peat a year and up to 1.4 million tonnes of fuel bricks. Belarus is Europe's second largest peat producer after Finland, the Energy Ministry said.
