Opinion: Policy of sanctions undermines foundations of free market economy

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) - The policy of sanctions undermines the foundations of free market economy, Professor Valery Bainev, Doctor of Economics, head of the Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Belarusian State University, said in an interview with the SB. Belarus Segodnya newspaper, BelTA has learned.

"If we look into the effectiveness of the current anti-Belarusian sanctions in terms of the results that the U.S. hopes to achieve renewing them, it is likely to be zero. Because no one in our country will agree to hold a redo election or to release local ‘activists' who have committed criminal offences, and who are for some reason called ‘political prisoners' in the West. But the damage to the global economy in the wake of anti-Belarusian, anti-Russian and any other sanctions is tangible, because they are de facto blatant acts of anti-market authoritarianism, when purely economic processes are influenced by frankly non-economic factors,” the economist is sure.

Any diligent economics major sophomore will tell you that any authoritarian interference in free market takes the situation in the market away from its equilibrium position, which ensures the most efficient expenditure of limited resources. Thus, by slapping sanctions right and left, the United States undermines its image of a bastion of democracy and free market, which has recently faded. The United States is like the infamous wife of a non-commissioned officer who whipped herself in Gogol's The government Inspector.”

On the other hand, according to Professor Valery Bainev, the policy of sanctions de facto undermines the foundations of free market economy, affects the efficiency of the use of scarce resources, thereby harming the ecological system of the planet, and as a result hindering the sustainable development of the entire civilization.

“If we look at this problem philosophically, we see that all this fuss about imposition, suspension and resumption of sanctions has only benefited Belarus, taught us a good lesson. We must finally learn to determine who our friend is and who just pretends to be so,” Professor Valery Bainev noted.
