MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) – If Belarus leaves the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), its losses might amount to a quarter of the GDP, analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR) Vitaly Demirov told BelTA.

“Taking into account direct and indirect aspects of Belarus-EAEU trade and economic cooperation, we can see that the profit from such cooperation accounts for around half of the current GDP. According to my estimates, the losses that Belarus might suffer in the short term will amount to 25 or, maybe, 20% of our GDP, taking into account a possible rise in energy prices,” Vitaly Demirov said.

According to him, the Eurasian Economic Union facilitates integration in four fields: movement of goods, services, capital, and workforce. Each of these segments offers its own advantages.

“Moreover, we should not forget that the EAEU has been developing rapidly thanks to the establishment of free trade areas with third countries (Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Serbia). The member states get access to more and more markets. The adoption of the Customs Code has also eased a number of procedures, which helps advance cooperation in logistics and in general improve the business climate of trade partnership,” the analyst noted. He meant digital transport corridors and special regulations on product certification that helped obtain significant economic advantages.
