MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) - Oman is Belarus' most important partner in the Middle East, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Rachkov told the media following the meeting between a parliamentary delegation from the Sultanate of Oman and Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova on 29 May, BelTA has learned.
“The Sultanate of Oman is our most important partner in the Middle East, and our relations with this country are developing in many areas. Of course, we focus on the development of trade and economic relations and investment cooperation. Our trade may not be very high. The highest figures were about $4 million. The Omani market is very demanding, and it takes a lot of efforts to enter it. Even the maximum turnover, which we have reached, is the result of great work of our enterprises. In January-March 2023 our trade has already soared almost four times,” Sergei Rachkov said.
Belarus mainly exports potash fertilizers, food and oil products to Oman. “Now we are increasing our efforts to develop trade, economic and investment cooperation. There are a number of projects, including the one envisaging a joint venture to produce bio-fertilizers. There are projects in oil refining. Significant cooperation is developing in services. Cooperation in healthcare is promising, so the Omani delegation is scheduled to visit the cancer center in Borovlyany. Cooperation in education is also promising,” the senator said.
“Of course, inter-parliamentary cooperation is important,” Sergei Rachkov added. “Here I would mention the support of the Omani Parliament for the Republic of Belarus in the international arena. The world is in turmoil today. Belarus is under political and economic pressure. It is very important to expand the list of friends. Oman is a friend, a partner that supports us in all the platforms, from the UN to the Inter-Parliamentary Union. We appreciate this support very much,” he said.
