More than half of area under sugar beets harvested in Belarus

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – As of 18 October, Belarusian agricultural workers harvested sugar beets on the area of 44,200 hectares (53.6% of the plan), BelTA learned from the updates posted by the Agriculture and Food Ministry.

Some 2,011.5 million tonnes of sugar beets were harvested. The yield is 455.1 centners per hectare with the sugar content at 16.1%.

Potatoes were harvested on the area of 23,600 hectares or 94% of the plan. Some 671,100 tonnes of potatoes were cropped (the yield – 284.3 centners per hectare). As far as other vegetables are concerned, 97,900 tonnes of vegetables were harvested on the area of 4,440 hectares (74% of the plan). The yield was 220.8 centners per hectare.

Maize was harvested on the area of 878,000 hectares, or 72% of the plan. Belarus harvested 824,200 hectares of maize for silage and fodder (81% of the plan) and gathered 19.655 million tonnes of grass feed with the yield at 238.5 centners per hectare. Harvesting of maize for grain is underway and is 25.2% complete: 53,800 hectares were harvested, with 364,600 tonnes threshed.

All in all, 8.424 million tonnes of grain was threshed across the country with the average yield at 37.5 centners per hectare (in 2019, the yield as of the same date was 33.4 centners per hectare). Minsk Oblast harvested more than 2.1 million tonnes of grain, Grodno Oblast more than 1.6 million tonnes, Brest Oblast over 1.4 million tonnes, Mogilev Oblast over 1.1 million tonnes, Vitebsk Oblast and Gomel Oblast more than 1 million tonnes.

Flax straw was harvested on the area of 47,300 hectares or 100% of the area under this crop. Some 158,500 tonnes of flax was procured, with the average yield at 36.1 centners per hectare.

Some 867,300 tonnes of hay (85.9% of the plan), 13.441 million tonnes of haylage (106.7%) and 16.839 million tonnes of silage (87.8%) were stocked. Plans are in place to procure 9.3 million tonnes of fodder units of grass feed, most of them in Minsk Oblast and Brest Oblast. By this time, 94.3% of the plan has been fulfilled.
