More Belarusian export via Estonian port Sillamae possible

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – Belarus may export more via the Estonian port Sillamae. The possibilities were discussed as Ambassador of Belarus to Estonia Vyacheslav Kachanov visited the port, BelTA has learned.

The ambassador met with Chairman of the Board of Directors of Port of Sillamae Company Tiit Vahi and representatives of the Estonian port administration. “Prospects of increasing Belarusian export via the Sillamae port were discussed as well as the involvement of Estonian companies in the implementation of Belarusian-Chinese projects, including on the basis of the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone,” representatives of the Belarusian embassy in Estonia said.

According to the Sillamae port website, the port is located 25km away from the Russian-European Union border. The location creates all the necessary prerequisites for effectively using the port as a distribution hub for transshipping cargos and various goods in the direction of Europe, the USA, Russia and other CIS states, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world. It is the European Union's easternmost deep-water port capable of handling any major vessels that enter the Baltic Sea via the Danish straits. The free customs zone Sillamae (0% taxes and duties) in combination with Estonia's liberal tax policy offers a most advantageous business environment not only for the international distribution of freight but also for manufacturing goods inside the free customs zone. In 2014 four berths with the total length of 850m were opened to handle containers and general cargo. Plans have been made to further develop the port infrastructure.
