Mobile diesel generator delivered to location of first unit of Belarusian nuclear power plant

MINSK, 12 June (BelTA) – A mobile diesel generator has been delivered to the location of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Press Secretary of the Belarusian Energy Ministry Olga Kozlovich.

In line with recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the national action plan compiled in the wake of stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant a mobile diesel generator has been delivered to the location of the first unit of the nuclear power plant for the sake of improving its safety.

The nuclear power plant design provides for plugging in a backup diesel generator in time of need. The diesel generator will be permanently on standby in the course of operation of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. If need be, the generator will be able to make sure the safeguards of the first unit remain operational.

According to the source, a set of procedures are being implemented to prepare for the physical launch of the first unit.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. Rosatom's engineering division – ASE – is the general contractor. The first unit is supposed to go online in 2020, with the second one scheduled for launch in 2021.
