Minsk hosts regional conference on arbitration and mediation

MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – A regional conference on arbitration and mediation was held in Minsk on 4-5 December. The event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Partners to the event were the National Center of Legal Information, the Belarusian National Lawyers Union and the UN Office in Belarus. More than 130 participants from Belarus, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Singapore, and Turkmenistan discussed international commercial arbitration and mediation, settlement of investment disputes.

The conference heard reports by UNCITRAL Secretary Anna Joubin-Bret, Deputy Chairman of Belarus Supreme Court Yuri Kobets, Chairman of the International Arbitration Court at the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jan Funk, Secretary General at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Annette Magnusson, American, Belarusian, Russian and French lawyers. The event was designed to help the states of the region to establish contacts with international arbitration bodies and to make the protection of the interests of states and enterprises in arbitration institutions more effective.

The United Nations Commission on International Trade and Law is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. A legal body with universal membership specializing in commercial law reform worldwide for over 50 years, UNCITRAL's business is the modernization and harmonization of rules on international business. Belarus is a member of UNCITRAL and actively participates in its work.
