
MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) - Belarus' main growth drivers were manufacturing sector, construction and trade, Belarusian Deputy Economy Minister Andrei Kartun told reporters commenting on the economic performance in January-August 2023, BelTA has learned.
"In January-August, GDP growth accelerated to 3.1%, up by 0.2% over January-July. Traditionally, manufacturing sector, construction and trade were the main drivers of GDP growth," Andrei Kartun said.
According to him, the manufacturing sector expanded by 7.9%. "Major contributors were mechanical engineering and machine tool industry, oil refining and chemical industry. Metallurgy, household appliances, food and light industries have also posted high growth rates," he said.
The deputy minister noted that construction makes gains every month. "The total added value in construction is at 4.5%. Major contributors were construction and installation works and contracted work. Housing construction has also gained momentum. Investment projects are in progress, including within the framework of the modernization of existing enterprises," Andrei Kartun said.
The recovery dynamics remains in place in transport and IT industries.
"Woodworking has fully rebounded. Enterprises were able to adapt to new conditions and find new markets," Andrei Kartun added.
