Iraqi investors interested in commercial, residential property construction projects in Gomel

GOMEL, 17 February (BelTA) – Iraqi investors are interested in constructing commercial and residential property in Gomel. This matter was in focus of a meeting between Gomel Oblast Governor Gennady Solovei and Belarus' Honorary Consul in the city of Erbil Fuad Hamad, BelTA has learned.

Iraqi investors are ready to share best practices in constructing large shopping and entertainment centers, private houses, and multi-storey residential buildings, Fuad Hamad noted. When investors choose suitable land plots they will be able to make more concrete proposals. “Land plots that could be used for both residential property and shopping and entertainment centers are more preferable,” the consul said. According to him, Iraqi companies are considering the possibility to do business in Belarus.

Gennady Solovei spoke about Gomel Oblast potential and invited Iraq to take part in the Gomel Economic Forum due in May 2020. “Advantageous geographic position of the region – Gomel Oblast borders Russia and Ukraine – makes it very attractive for investors, including for implementation of large construction projects,” the governor stressed.

The parties also discussed possible construction sites for Iraqi investors in Gomel. The guests got familiar with the sites.

“We are satisfied with the results of the meeting. We see that the local authorities are eager to attract foreign investment. I am sure that the parties will find common ground on projects to build commercial and residential property,” Fuad Hamad said.

In 2019, trade between Gomel Oblast and Iraq amounted to $20.6 million, almost 182% as against 2018. Exports of Belarusian enterprises included products form ferrous metals of the Belarusian steel mill BMZ, timber, lumber, and wood products.
