IAEA ready to develop cooperation with Belarus

OSTROVETS DISTRICT, 7 August (BelTA) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is ready to develop cooperation with Belarus, IAEA Director of Division of Planning, Information and knowledge Management Huang Wei told reporters, BelTA has learned.

The IAEA has worked closely with the Belarusian side to help it build nuclear energy infrastructure. Belarus has hosted a number of IAEA missions to review nuclear energy infrastructure, the plant's readiness for operation and other safety assessment missions. We welcome the progress that Belarus has made, and we are ready to cooperate and work with Belarus further, Huang Wei said.

We are interested in supporting the countries that develop nuclear energy, including Belarus, he added.

The IAEA believes that the BelNPP project will contribute to energy security, and social and economic development of the country. According to the agency, the NPP will help the country reduce greenhouse gas emissions and de-corbanize its energy sector.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. Rosatom's engineering division – ASE Company – is the general contractor. The 3+ generation nuclear units have improved performance indicators.
