Hazelnut and walnut trees planted in Belarus

MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – Hazelnut and walnut trees are planted in Belarus, Tatiana Karbanovich, Deputy Head of the Central Office for Crop Farming of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry, said at a press conference on 5 September, BelTA has learned.

Farms jointly with research institutions are currently working on an import substitution project to set up plantations of hazelnut and walnut trees. The ultimate goal of the project is to find out whether these crops can be produced on an industrial scale in Belarus. About 60 hectares of hazelnut trees and some 22 hectares of walnut trees were planted in Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast, Tatiana Karbanovich said.

She also told about other types of crops planted in Belarus. For example, green beans are mostly cultivated in Gomel Oblast; the area under this crop exceeds 50 hectares. The expected harvest is 380 tonnes. Green beans are later frozen and canned. A small amount is sold fresh.

Sweet corn is produced by the Turovshchina company in Zhitkovichi District of Gomel Oblast. The area under this crop increased from 40ha to 150ha. The expected harvest is 1,500 tonnes.

Approximately 450 tonnes of gourds is expected to be harvested this year. Gourds are mostly cultivated in Brest Oblast, Gomel Oblast, Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast. As of 3 September, about 130 tonnes of watermelons was harvested. They are sold through the Belarusian Union of Consumer Societies system. The selling price is currently Br0.4-0.6 per kilogram.
