Gomel Oblast to cooperate with Kyrgyzstan's Chuy Region

GOMEL, 26 February (BelTA) – The Gomel Oblast Executive Committee and the Office of the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Kyrgyzstan Government to Chuy Region have signed an agreement on cooperation in trade, economy, science, technology, humanitarian affairs, and culture, BelTA learned from Gomel Oblast Vice Governor Andrei Konyushko.

Chuy Region is the capital region of Kyrgyzstan. The signing of the document was a significant step for the parties, Andrei Konyushko said. This is the 70th interregional agreement for Gomel Oblast, but the first such agreement with a region of Kyrgyzstan.

“Kyrgyzstan is a member state of the Eurasian Economic Union. It is a promising market for promoting our products to the neighboring countries,” Andrei Konyushko noted. Moreover, mutually beneficial cooperation with Chuy Region will help Gomel Oblast diversify export.

The document was signed at a session of the Belarus-Kyrgyzstan intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation that was held in Minsk. The parties are set to draft a road map to implement the agreement.

Andrei Konyushko pointed out that Gomel Oblast already had certain ties with Kyrgyzstan. Their trade came at over $10.5 million in 2019, with Gomel Oblast export accounting for $8.5 million. A total of 26 enterprises of the region exported their products to Kyrgyzstan, including Gomselmash, Multipack, Mozyrsalt, door- and wallpaper-makers. Turov Dairy Plant has started to advance its products, in particular cream cheese, to the Kyrgyz market.

“Our partners are interested in a lot of cooperation areas, including in setting up joint ventures and assembly plants. At the same time we need to analyze economic viability and prospects for getting access to third markets. Kyrgyzstan also shows interest in milk powder and products of the industrial sector. We are also ready to supply products of confectioneries,” Andrei Konyushko noted.

After signing the agreement, representatives of Gomel Oblast invited the Kyrgyz party to take part in the economic forum due in Gomel in May and in the international expo Spring in Gomel. “We have established close relations and now we will work to achieve results in economy, humanitarian affairs, and other fields,” Andrei Konyushko added.
