First round of FTA talks between EAEU, Egypt successful

MOSCOW, 17 January (BelTA) – The first round of negotiations on signing a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Egypt took place in Cairo on 15-17 January, the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission told BelTA.

The sides discussed the main provisions of the agreement, recorded the points they had agreed on, and sketched out a schedule for further work. The Eurasian Economic Union and Egypt demonstrated readiness for a constructive dialogue about all the matters the agreement affects. They confirmed their eagerness to put together a full-fledged progressive agreement designed to make sure the trade terms are predictable and trade regulations are transparent.

The free trade agreement will open up new opportunities for Eurasian Economic Union member states for developing and diversifying trade with Egypt. In January-October 2018 EAEU-Egypt trade totaled $5.8 billion, 21.2% up from January-October 2017.

The Eurasian Economic Union is also in negotiations on signing free trade agreements with Singapore, Serbia, and Israel.
