EU to allocate €60m to support Belarus' healthcare, economy

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) – The European Union will allocate €60 million to help Belarus support its healthcare and mitigate the impact of the coronavirus situation on its economy, said Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission, BelTA has learned.

“The total amount of this support has not yet been determined. I can say, however, that it will amount to some €60 million. Belarus has requested assistance for its healthcare system, as well as to address the macroeconomic and macro-financial consequences of this situation. We are studying how we can respond to these requests, particularly in terms of economic support to the healthcare system and the society,” Josep Borrell said.

“Last week the European Commission announced the allocation of €30 million for the Eastern Neighborhood countries to support healthcare and medical supplies, as well as an additional €10 million for vulnerable groups. We also envisage some €300 million in loans and grants for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Eastern Partnership countries to support, facilitate access to credit and stimulate business after the crisis,” Josep Borrell said.

The vice president of the European Commission said that the message is simple and clear: “The European Union is ready to support partners and neighbors in this very difficult time, and we will respond as flexibly as possible to calls for help wherever they come from”.
