Early spring planting in Belarus almost 89% complete

MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) - Early spring crops have been sown on 88.6% of the target area in Belarus, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

As of 28 April, early spring cereals and leguminous crops (excluding maize, buckwheat and millet) were planted on the area of 576,400ha, or 88.6% of the plan. Progress in planting these crops reached 72% in Vitebsk Oblast, 82.3% in Gomel Oblast, 78.9% in Mogilev Oblast. Early planting works have been completed in Brest Oblast, Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast.

Belarusian agricultural workers have planted buckwheat on the area 0,240ha, or 0.70% of the plan, millet – 0,090ha, or 0.89%. Spring colza has been planted on the area of 20,300ha, or 43.4% of the target, flax – on 32,400ha, or 69.1%, sugar beet – on 77,900ha, or 76.6%, vegetables – 1,630ha, or 34%, maize – 142,900ha, or 12.4%, including grain maize – 93,800ha, or 35.4% and maize for silage – 49,000ha, or 5.55%, potatoes – on 4,270ha, or 16.4%.

Early spring cereals and leguminous crops will occupy a total of 650,400ha this year. Grain maize will be planted on 265,300ha, potatoes – on 26,100ha, sugar beets – on 101,700ha. This year, agricultural organizations and farms must ensure the production of 8,877,000 tonnes of grain.
