Coronavirus lockdown: It is easy to halt, but not always possible to resume operation

MINSK, 30 March (BelTA) – Director General of Baranovichi Cotton Production Association (Blakit) Ivan Turchak spoke to the media about the consequences that draconian measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus may bring to business, BelTA has learned.

Ivan Turchak hailed the fact that enterprises in Belarus continue their operation, while the neighboring countries close them amid the global spread of the coronavirus. “We need to work. It is quite easy to halt, but sometimes it is impossible to resume operation. It means a loss of customers and specialists, never mind the internal processes at the enterprise” he said.

The director general of the Baranovichi Cotton Production Association added that the industry suffers losses first of all due to the intense information field created around the coronavirus situation. The Baranovichi company is no exception. “There has been a rather serious decline, first of all, in export orders. Our foreign clients have actually stopped their activity. We are in standby mode. The enterprise continues its operation. We will be adjusting to the situation. We have developed several anti-crisis scenarios,” Ivan Turchak said.

General Director of Mark Formelle Andrei Serikov emphasized that the greatest value for any enterprise is its personnel. A lot of money has been invested in training specialists. “If we lose the production staff, we will be gone. All our investments for the last ten years will go up in smoke,” he said and expressed hope that the situation will improve in the near future. In the meantime, the company is working out an action plan for the near future. There has been an increase in online sales, including at the Baranovichi company. However, it is early to talk about the replacement of offline trade, export supplies.
