Belarusian sugar mills seek to gain foothold in African and Asian markets

MINSK, 15 July (BelTA) - The situation in the sugar industry remains difficult. With prices hovering low in neighboring countries, the Belarusian sugar mills want to gain a foothold in the markets of Africa and Asia, Anatoly Buben, chairman of the Belarusian state food industry concern Belgospishcheprom, said in an interview with BelTA .

“The situation in the sugar industry remains difficult. Due to the surplus production of sugar in the EAEU countries, including in Belarus, the prices have fallen significantly over the past three years and remain extremely low. Hence, the country's sugar industry has been working on export diversification looking for more marginal markets: in January-May 2020, we supplied sugar to 28 countries (nine countries in 2019),” Anatoly Buben said.

According to him, the main task of the sugar industry is to diversify export and consolidate the positions in new markets, particularly in Asia and Africa.
