Belarusian satellite BKA-1 to stay in service till 2024

MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) – The operational life of the Belarusian satellite for the remote sensing of Earth will be extended till 2024, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov told reporters prior to the session of the Interstate Council for Outer Space of the Commonwealth of Independent States on 22 January, BelTA has learned.

“We are to finish the work on the conceptual design of a new satellite this year and in 2021 we will start creating it. We could make it very fast, but we just do not have to, because the Belarusian satellite is operating well. We believe that we will keep this satellite in orbit till 2024,” Vladimir Gusakov said. In his words, this will help save a lot of funds.

The resolution of the existing Belarusian satellite is 2 meters, while the new satellite will have the resolution of 35 centimeters. “This is a super-high resolution, one of the world's best,” the scientist said.

The CIS Interstate Council for Outer Space was established in order to coordinate efforts aimed at implementing the CIS agreement on joint work in studying and using outer space for peaceful purposes. The agreement was signed in Astana, Kazakhstan on 2 November 2018. Taking part in the session in Minsk are delegations of the CIS member states, heads of the space industries of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Armenia, representatives of the CIS Executive Committee and the Eurasian Economic Commission.
