Belarus to invest heavily to implement new solid municipal waste sorting, recycling concept

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Over Br1.4 billion will be invested in implementing a concept for setting up facilities for sorting and using solid municipal waste and landfills by 2030, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Housing and Utilities Minister Vitaly Smirnov.

The official said that a total of over Br1.4 billion will be needed to implement the entire concept over the course of ten years.

Among other things the concept provides for building 30 regional centers for sorting and using waste. Resources of international financial organizations will be used to implement these projects. For instance, a regional landfill will be established in Pukhovichi, Minsk Oblast with assistance of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Money of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will be used to build two facilities to use waste. “Regional schemes are being developed virtually in every oblast. Measures will be taken to set up facilities once they are approved,” the deputy housing and utilities minister added.
