Belarus to attend ISO General Assembly 2019

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – A Belarusian delegation led by Chairman of the State Committee for Standardization Valentin Tataritsky is set to take part in the 42nd General Assembly of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which is to take place in Cape Town, the Republic of South Africa on 19-20 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee for Standardization.

The meeting will highlight ISO development through 2030. Participants are set to determine the priorities for the organization, and define the strategy to guide it through the next ten years. The document will take into account universally applied standards as important tools for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The program of the General Assembly will feature a wide platform for discussion with the focus on economic, environmental, technological and social factors.

A working meeting of the CIS national agencies for standardization, metrology and certification together with the ISO authorities, European Standardization Organizations CEN and CENELEC will be held in the run-up to the 42nd ISO General Assembly. On the sidelines of the Assembly the Belarusian delegation will meet with representatives of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) and also hold bilateral working groups with representatives of the standardization agencies from different countries.

The State Committee for Standardization is an umbrella national governmental body responsible for cooperation with ISO. Belarus joined the organization in 1993. Today, the country takes part in the work of 175 technical commissions and subcommittees on ISO standardization, and also in the ISO's Committee on Conformity Assessment (ISO/CASCO), the Committee on Developing Country Matters (ISO/DEVCO), the Committee on Reference Materials (ISO/REMCO), and the Committee on Consumer Policy (ISO/COPOLCO).

ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 164 national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. ISO has published over 22,780 International Standards and related documents, covering almost every industry.
