Belarus sets 1 May as final planting date for early grains, beets, flax

VETKA, 28 April (BelTA) - Belarusian farmers have been tasked to complete the planting of early grains, beets, and flax before 1 May, Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister Igor Brylo reported to President Aleksandr Lukashenko during his working trip to Vetka District on 28 April, BelTA has learned.

The minister added that the area under a number of crops had been increased, including under sugar beets and maize for silage.

“As of 28 April, there were 77,000 hectares of early crops left to sow. We put 1 May is the deadline,” the minister said.

“We are ahead of last year in sugar beet sowing. A total of 77% of the target has been sown. The deadline for the regions is also 1 May,” he said.

As for flax, we have already sown 69% of the plan. Last year it was 38% on the same date. “We have 14,500 hectares left to plant. We also set 1 May is the deadline here,” Igor Brylo said.

The task is to sow spring colza in all regions by 1 May, except Vitebsk, where the work with this crop is to be finished by 5 May.

“As of 28 April, we planted maize on the area of 142,000 thousand hectares - 12% of the target. We have one million hectares to plant. All regions have been tasked to complete this work by 20 May,” the minister said. According to him, the farmers have all necessary equipment and seeds for it.

Igor Brylo added that the agricultural organizations had already completed the first application of fertilizers. The second top dressing is in progress now.
