Belarus ready to help set up dairy farms in Georgia

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to help Georgia set up dairy farms. Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun made the statement during a session of the Belarus-Georgia intergovernmental commission on cooperation on 19 February, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “The Belarusian side is ready to continue working on supplying pedigree cattle and food, assist with the establishment of breeding centers in Georgia as well as dairy farms by leveraging Belarusian technologies.”

There is an interest in cooperation with Georgia in the development of aquaculture and seed farming (potato and flax). “We are also ready to train Georgian students in Belarusian agrarian universities,” the deputy agriculture and food minister added.

Mutual trade in agricultural products and food was mentioned as a promising avenue of Belarus-Georgia cooperation. In 2019 trade in agricultural products totaled $40.5 million. Export to Georgia amounted to $11.9 million, with import at $28.6 million.

According to Vladimir Grakun, Belarus traditionally imports such products from Georgia as mineral water, distilled spirits, grape wines, and nuts. Belarus exports dairy and meat products as well as cattle to Georgia.

“Our mutual trade in agricultural products and food develops dynamically. However, considerable untapped reserves are available for further increasing the trade volume,” the deputy agriculture and food minister believes.
