MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – The situation in the leather industry has somewhat improved but the efficiency remains low, Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Rumas said at a session of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers to discuss the state of things in the leather industry on 22 April, BelTA reports.
“Figures suggest that the situation has somewhat improved since the start of the year. However, not all issues have been removed. The efficiency of operation of leather producers remains low, unfortunately. Therefore, today we should discuss ways to rectify the situation and take stock of our earlier decisions to see whether they have worked, and take new decisions if needed,” Sergei Rumas said.
The head of government noted that the difficult situation in the industry was aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic. “Many foreign consumers of leather products suspended operations. Some of domestic customers cut working hours. At the same time, these challenges open up new opportunities for the leather industry,” the prime minister believes.
The situation in the industry was previously discussed at the session of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers about half a year ago. The premier recalled that in 2020 the government introduced a system of government orders for raw hides, removed all restrictions and allowed selling unsold substandard raw materials through stock trading.
