Belarus' PM: Consumer prices are kept under control

MINSK, 27 July (BelTA) – The government is keeping prices on the consumer market under control, Belarus' Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said in an interview to the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The situation with prices is absolutely normal. We are meeting the forecast parameters, even going below the forecast. The task set for the government and the National Bank is that the annual growth in consumer prices should not exceed 5%. Since the start of the year the consumer price growth has made up 3.4%. It is even lower if we talk about the prices under control. There was a difficult period when inflation, prices went up because of the disruption in supply chains. You remember there was a huge demand for ginger, lemons, and buckwheat. We had to level off the situation both by regulatory and economic methods,” Roman Golovchenko said.

The prime minister stressed that the president had set a strict task then, which was to keep prices under control, despite all the crisis phenomena. “We have done this. Prices for meat products have dropped by almost 10%. So have the prices for dairy, bakery and other products. Prices have slightly increased for fruit and vegetable products: citrus fruits, apples, potatoes cabbage, onions. These are all imported products. It is an absolutely seasonal phenomenon. As soon as we get our harvest, prices will go down immediately. The government is keeping the situation with prices under control,” he said.

“I would like to address the economic circles that have been actively commenting on the government's actions, saying that everything is bad, that the government will now turn on the printing press (although the government does not have such powers) and will start to increase everyone's salaries, that there will be an emission, and the exchange rate of the US dollar will go up again. What is it done for? Why do they try to inflate tensions every day? I do not have a clear answer to this question. We have enough money in the budget to fulfill all our social commitments and development programs,” the prime minister said.
