Belarus plans to grow construction sector to 5.7% of GDP in 2019

MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – The share of the construction industry in GDP is expected to reach 5.7% by the end of 2019, Vice Premier Vladimir Kukharev told the STV channel, BelTA has learned.

“In H1 the contribution of the construction sector to GDP increased. According to our estimates, the share of the sector in GDP will approximate 5.7% in 2019 [according to the National Statistics Committee, this figure stood at 5.4% in 2018],” the vice premier informed.

In line with Directive No. 8 “On construction industry development priorities” as of 4 March 2019, the construction sector's share in the country's GDP should reach at least 6.3% by 2025. When asked about growth points in the construction sector, Vladimir Kukharev said: “We approach this task in a comprehensive way. First of all, construction engineering is believed to be the major driver of growth and contributor to sustainable economic development. Substantial progress has been achieved in the export of building materials. This sector holds a lot of promise.”

Vladimir Kukharev noted that he pays a lot of attention to the export of construction services. “We see that our services are in demand. Belarusian specialists work in Russia, the Baltic Sea states and Poland. We see good opportunities in Eastern Europe. We are very earnest about it,” he noted.

He added that Directive No. 8 gave a serious impetus to the industry.
