Belarus' external state debt 2.6% up to $17.6bn in January-September 2020

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) – As of 1 October 2020 Belarus' external state debt totaled $17.6 billion, up by $0.4 billion or 2.6% since the beginning of the year (taking into account differences in currency exchange rates), BelTA learned from the Belarusian Finance Ministry.

In January-September 2020 the Belarusian government borrowed $1,964.1 million abroad, including $1,391.5 million as bonds floated on foreign financial markets, $432.2 million from the Russian government and banks, $81.8 million from the Export–Import Bank of China, $50.9 million from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and $7.7 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB).

In January-September 2020 Belarus spent $1,323.3 million to repay the external state debt, including $587.6 million to the Russian government and banks, $390.7 million to Chinese banks, $264.8 million to the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD), $76.7 million to the IBRD, $2.8 million to the EBRD and the NIB, and $0.7 million to the U.S. Commodity Credit Corporation.

As of 1 October 2020 Belarus' state debt totaled Br56.9 billion, up by Br12.1 billion or 27% since the beginning of the year.

The internal state debt amounted to Br10.5 billion as of 1 October. Taking into account differences in currency exchange rates, the internal state debt went up by Br1.7 billion or 20% since the beginning of the year.

In January-September 2020 the Belarusian government sold $294.4 million and Br300 million worth of domestic government bonds nominated in foreign and national currencies to individuals and corporations and redeemed $469.5 million and Br161.2 million worth of government bonds nominated in foreign and national currencies from corporations and individuals.
