Belarus calls for new content for CIS-SCO cooperation agenda

MOSCOW, 17 March (BelTA) – It is necessary to fill the agenda of interaction between the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with new content. Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Igor Petrishenko made the statement at a session of the CIS Economic Council in Moscow on 17 March, BelTA has learned.

Igor Petrishenko said: “Speaking of cooperation between integration associations, I believe time has come to fill the agenda of interaction between the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with new content. The first step was made all the way back in 2005 when the CIS Executive Committee and the SCO Secretariat signed a memorandum of understanding. This framework document remains topical and could be filled with concrete content of interaction between the two executive bodies in the form of the relevant action plan similarly to the Eurasian Economic Commission.”

The official suggested instructing the CIS Executive Committee to work on this initiative with the SCO Secretariat. “In turn, Belarus is ready to take an active part in this work, including in view of the forthcoming membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” the deputy prime minister added.

Igor Petrishenko remarked that the CIS Economic Council session coincided with the organization of the CIS International Economic Forum. “Its format goes beyond the borders of the Commonwealth of Independent States this year. We will talk about a dialogue of integrations between four integration platforms, which are among the planet's largest. It is very timely since at the current stage of development of a multipolar world system such a key international association that the Commonwealth of Independent States is cannot stay away from comprehensive geoeconomic processes. I suggest looking at our Commonwealth of Independent States as a potential engine of integration with friendly associations. We have everything we need for it,” he concluded.
