Belarus' academician: Locally produced goods should be internationally competitive

MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – Locally produced goods that will replace imports should be of high quality and competitive in international markets, First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academician Sergei Chizhik said at the international conference Metrology 2022 in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

“We have gathered at an interesting time, a time of challenges, non-standard tasks. We are facing the task to substitute imports, develop and launch new types of products. Of course, we should not compromise the quality. It is not enough to develop and produce goods. First of all, we need to roll out a high-quality, competitive product that will enter international markets,” Sergei Chizhik said.

According to him, metrology is an exact science that requires knowledge of mathematics, physics, understanding of technology, production processes. “The National Academy of Sciences and a number of affiliated institutes are actively working on it. In particular, a number of standards have been created in our laboratories,” he added.

In turn, Director of the Belarusian State Institute of Metrology (BelGIM) Valery Gurevich noted that the conference is designed to review the performance and discuss development prospects of metrological activities in Belarus. “It allows taking stock of the results achieved and discussing the uniformity of measurements. Metrology is the basic science that helps understand the world around us, assess the quality and safety of products. First of all, metrology relies on national standards. Today there are 63 national standards in Belarus. By 2025, their number will reach 74,” Valery Gurevich noted.

The international conference Metrology 2022 is timed to the 30th anniversary of the State Committee for Standardization of Belarus. It is taking place in Minsk on 5-6 April. The event has brought together about 130 scientists and practitioners from Belarus, Russia, Uzbekistan and other countries. They represent national metrology institutes, the manufacturing industry, energy sector, construction, healthcare, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, higher educational institutions, etc. The participants of the conference will discuss topical issues of metrology and the uniformity of measurements in Belarus, the CIS countries and the EAEU, the role of BelGIM as a national institute of metrology, metrological support for production, the creation of standards, standard samples and high-precision measuring instruments, digitalization in metrology, etc.
