11 Belarusian forestry enterprises busy testing digital timber filing system

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – A digital timber filing system is being tested in 11 forestry enterprises, the press service of the Belarusian Forestry Ministry told BelTA.

The Uzda forestry enterprise was the first one to start testing the system. The prototype is now being tested in 11 forestry enterprises. The number will increase gradually. The software has already been installed in all the 98 forestry enterprises.

A draft presidential decree provides for a gradual rollout of a universal state automated information system for keeping timber records in 2021. The document has already been reconciled with the oblast administrations and a number of ministries. Work to reconcile it with other government agencies continues.

The work to develop the digital timber record keeping system began in 2017 upon instructions of the head of state. The investment fund of the Forestry Ministry financed the work. Only Belarusian specialists were involved in the development of this piece of software. All the legal persons and self-employed businessmen that deal with timber harvesting and sales are supposed to use the system.

A similar system to control timber harvesting and trade was created in Russia in 2014. Market players are required to use it for all deals involving timber and forest products. Similar computer systems are in use in Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Baltic states, and other countries.
